Winemaker's Comments

Vintage 20 celebrates our 20-year journey making Merry Edwards Pinot Noir. Appropriately it contains individual lots of wine from each of our producing estate vineyards: Coopersmith, Georganne, Meredith Estate and Warrens’ Hill. The blend is primarily composed of my own UCD37 clone, with small percentages of Dijon 667 and the descendant of the Windsor Gardens vineyard.
These vineyards reveal the story of our development, first as a wine brand and then evolving and maturing into a winery estate grounded by our own winery facility in Sebastopol. Meredith was the first, the foundation vineyard, followed by Coopersmith surrounding the winery, Georganne on Westside Road and Warrens’ Hill overlooking Green Valley. Our portfolio of vineyards has continued to expand with even more vines coming into production.
Vintage 20 is a dramatic Pinot Noir with a core of dark, yummy fruit — Elephant Heart plum, blueberry and Bing cherry — surrounded by aromas of toasted sage, black tea, mushroom and spicy, exotic woods. A perfume of blood-red roses, gardenias and wildflowers is an accent. This big, bold Pinot is designed to develop for many years and so will continue to reveal endless layers of complexity with time.
Bright on the palate with balanced acidity, this lush Pinot is a heavyweight — rich and full-bodied with velvety, ripe tannins. Luscious semisweet and dark chocolate build in the mouth and linger long on the finish, leaving a lasting memory.
Pistachio-Encrusted Rack of Lamb with Pomegranate Glaze is my chosen pairing for this one-of-a-kind wine. The richness of the lamb heightens the rich, savory nature of Vintage 20. Join us in celebration!

"This special bottling, a blend of the best barrels from selected vineyards, celebrates Merry Edwards’ 20th vintage under her name. Aside from the sheer deliciousness of the wine, it makes an important point -- single vineyard wines are not always superior to those made from a blend of several vineyards. The densest and most brooding of her 2016 Pinot Noirs, it is still not overdone or over the top. It delivers an alluring combination of dark fruit flavors, dark minerality and spice. Even though all her 2016s have a lovely texture, this one is the most velvety and refined. The contrast between the power and elegance is extraordinary. It’s the one wine in her line up of 2016 Pinot Noirs that I would suggest cellaring for a couple of years at least to allow its flavors to unfold. But, hey, there are four others you can drink while waiting for this one."
