2008 Sauvignon Blanc
We source these Sauvignon Blanc grapes from a small collection of excellent properties throughout Russian River Valley. The enduring foundation for this wine since its inception in 2001 has been Dutton-Cohen. Located above Occidental, it was established some thirty years ago and is farmed with care by Joe and Steve Dutton. The blend is now supplemented by the new Dutton-Jewell Ranch in Green Valley. The Dutton family planted this exclusively for us in 2005, to the Sauvignon Musqué clone. Other contributors are Crinella and La Rochelle vineyards on the Santa Rosa Plain and our own Cresta d’Oro in the Sebastopol Hills area.
This wine allures the senses with an appealing aroma that is both sophisticated and complex. Tempting layers unfold as rich honey dew melon, fragrant lemon blossom and a hint of tropical lychee fruit. A suggestion of dried wildflowers and ripe guava adds more charming elements. The inherent mouthwatering character of the Musqué clone has been enhanced by our dedicated program of intense batônnage. One hundred percent barrel fermented in French oak, eighteen percent new, this compelling Sauvignon Blanc shows a generous richness on the palate unusual for the varietal.
As a starter plate, try my new recipe for Winter Citrus Salad. Another yummy dish to enjoy with this wine is Cream of Scallop Soup flavored with piquant Poblano crème fraîche. Risotto flavored with lemon zest, fresh sautéed asparagus, wild mushrooms and spring peas is another attractive pairing.
"This newest rendition of a perennial CGCW favorite assumes its accustomed place at the head of the pack. It displays a rewarding sense of richness beneath its engaging freshness with elements of Crenshaw melons and green figs set against tailored oak spice and complimentary herbaceousness. It confirms the notion that Sauvignon Blanc is capable of real sophistication and class, and its combination of balance and polish promises to keep it in fine shape for years to come." Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, February 2010
"Merry Edwards consistently makes one of the cleanest, freshest sauvignons from her Russian River Valley grapes. This vintage is filled with honeyed citrus scents, lemon curd and fresh-cut apple flavors that last. It's round enough for veal sausages roasted with apples." Wine & Spirits Magazine, April 2010
"Effusively fragrant, with honeysuckle, apple blossom, peach and ripe melon flavors that are delicious, ripe and extremely mouthwatering, with an acidity that dances along the rich, creamy texture." MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator Insider, "Hot Wines," May 5, 2010
