2007 Klopp Ranch Pinot Noir
We have worked with grower Ted Klopp for many years. Beginning in 1989 and continuing through each expansion of the vineyard, we helped him decide what clones to plant. The diversity of these selections and the individual terroir of each block have allowed us to create blends reflecting the site’s enduring character year after year. Making farming decisions together throughout the growing season has expanded on a base of consistent quality.
This partnership has rewarded us with a decade of stunning vintages. The 2007 shows the hallmark Klopp personality – bramble fruit through and through. The aroma is like a trip through the countryside with ripe blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries and ollalieberries all joining in the medley. Notes of cola, sweet vanilla and cassis add to its charm. In the mouth, the tannins are well integrated, smooth and approachable. Savory oak and a touch of rose hips lift the rich, weighty finish.
"It is not that this wine is bigger or bolder than its stablemates. It just seems that way because its generous aromas seemingly jump out of the glass, and the layered quality of those aromas reinforces the notion that this is top-notch Pinot. Its full and supple impressions at entry are followed by ripe, deep and deliciously fruity flavors of sweet red cherries, toasted bread, rich, creamy oak and hints of dried raspberries. Its initial hints of velvet might suggest early drinking, but this is a Pinot with lots and lots of potential for growth." Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, June 2010
