Warrens' Hill

This vineyard is perched high atop a steep hillside in Green Valley along the western edge of Russian River Valley. This vineyard honors three Warrens who have been important in Merry's life: Warren Dutton, a good friend and prominent grower; Warren Arnold, a friend, partner and talented sculptor; and son Warren, who passed away in 2006. The inaugural wine shows a promising level of complexity reminiscent of Windsor Gardens, the source of the budwood.

      "The 2019 ‘Warrens’ Hill Vineyard’ is a tribute to the three significant Warrens’ in Merry’s life — Warren Miller, Warren Arnold and Warren Dutton. Intense and hedonistic once on the nose, this showcases tart red fruits that collide with tobacco leaf, orange zest and shades of freshly tilled soils. The palate is chewy and dense with bright acidity and a soft mouthfeel, with wonderful length. Beautiful to consume now, this has another fifteen years ahead of it."

      "Deep ruby color. Juicy plums and raspberries and cherries on the nose, airy but deep, laced with cola, rhubarb, rose petals, and lot of earthy, herbal and spice rub tones – exquisite to sniff. Vibrant acidity and suave tannins, wonderfully balanced, this is full but fresh with tangy strawberry and juicy black cherry fruit. There’s an underlying stony, mineral essence and an airy, floral quality throughout. Complex notes of earth, spice, pepper, red flowers, mint. Give this air and time, but it’s beautiful."

      "Medium garnet in color, this wine smells of bright cherry and cranberry fruit. In the mouth, fantastic acidity makes flavors of cherry and raspberry come alive and bounce across the palate. Faint, gauzy tannins coat the mouth, and flavors of citrus peel linger in the finish along with bright cherry. Excellent."

      "This ruby colored Pinot Noir from Merry Edwards was very well-received by our mini-tasting group. It opens with cola, clove, and cinnamon bouquet with hints of vanilla. On the palate is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is bright and juicy. The flavor profile is spiced plum and red raspberry blend with notes of cardamom and stony minerality. We also detected hints of blood orange and loam towards the end. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity linger and last for a very long time."

      "Sturdier than the Bucher with its youthful tannins sticking out a bit, this wine is, accordingly, a bit closed-in at this writing, especially on the palate. Its promising aromas are possessed of tight, ripe black cherry fruit that are paralleled in style by the wine’s somewhat muscular palatal impressions. It is likely to last even longer than the Bucher entry, and it is always going to show off its structure in a more noticeable way. Give it five to eight years in bottle."

      "The color of the Merry Edwards Warren’s Hill Pinot Noir 2018, Russian River Valley, is dark purple-magenta shading to an ethereal violet rim; it’s a warm and appealing pinot noir, delivering notes of macerated red and black currants and cherries infused with cloves and sandalwood, blueberries and baked plums, with hints of wood smoke, cedar and tobacco; on the palate, the wine is characterized by soft, supple wood tones, a lithe and silky texture and deep, foresty fruit; it’s quite dry and develops some austerity on the graphite-tinged finish."

It has a stemmy intensity of baked fruit, forest and black tea that dances around firm, structured tannins."

      "As should be expected, the latest lot of new Pinot Noirs from this iconic producer counts more than a few successes, but this first-ever bottling from a site named for three significant “Warrens” in Merry’s life jumps out and claims a place at the very head of an accomplished class. Its intense, extraordinarily deep and keenly varietal aromas show layers and layers of ripe cherries, cola, creamy oak and subtle accents of minerals, and its equally complex, fully packed flavors are every bit as deep and compelling. While we must admit that it is so tasty and involving that we would happily accept a glass or two if offered right now, it has the balance and ineffable pedigree of an exceptionally cellar-worthy offering that will keep gaining interest well beyond its tenth anniversary."

      "Storied winemaker Merry Edwards and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, sold her eponymous winery and brand in early 2019 to the Louis Roederer Champagne house. Edwards, whose winemaking career began at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974, progressed to Matanzas Creek Winery and Laurier Winery in Sonoma County and then on to consulting posts throughout the state. As a pioneer in introducing clonal diversity in Northern California vineyards and one of the most prominent role models for women in the wine business, Edwards bottled this Warrens’ Hill Pinot Noir to honor the late Russian River Valley grapegrower Warren Dutton; Edwards’ friend and sculptor, Warren Arnold; and her son, Warren Miller, who died in 2006 at age 18. This tribute is elegant and medium-full-bodied, with dark cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate personality. It’s a tasty tribute to important people in Merry Edwards’ life, and a sentimental swan song for the 'Queen of Pinot.' "
