Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

Dessert Wine of the Year
"Miss Russian River Valley known for her stunning Pinot Noirs scores big with this sweet nectar from the wine gods. Fruit drops, cane cut, bird netted, picked on Halloween, cold soaked, then finally barrel fermented producing a wine begging for fois gras, if you are so inclined, or dessert in the form of a white peach gallette."

"The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest is laced with the essence of tangerine peel, crystallized ginger, dried flowers, spice and mint. Beautifully perfumed and light on its feet, the Late Harvest is classy, refreshing and impossible to resist."

    • "An out-of-body experience"

"This late harvest wine is the first from the Maefield Vineyard planted by Merry in 2015. The bright pale yellow color is deceiving as this unctuous wine reveals grandiose aromas of apricot blossom, beeswax and caramelized ginger. On the entry, the wine soars from the glass with dried white peach layered with almond paste. As you turn the corner, the wine finishes refreshing with a touch of acidity making it seem like you had an out-of body-experience."

    • "Romantic Wines for Valentine's Day"

"This wonderful, yellow-gold dessert wine is rich, delightfully balanced, lushly textured, engagingly complex and exceedingly long on the finish. An ideal celebratory wine for after dinner sipping."

"This  dessert wine was made from a block of the Musqué clone at the  producer’s  Meredith  Estate,  picked  when  they were raisined then fermented and aged in 60% new French oak. A briny green-olive tone dots the nose before the sweetness of caramel,  honeycomb, gingersnap and vanilla weighs in on the palate. This is concentrated, lush and creamy, with a bright citrus flourish on the finish."

    • "Our Favorite Dessert Wine Picks"

"Merry Edwards, legendary Sonoma winemaker who crafts a beautiful sweet Sauvignon Blanc, explains her inspiration: 'I have always been enamored with the great late-harvest wines of the world—the best Sauternes and Trockenbeerenauslese.' The former is the famed sweet white of Bordeaux, the latter ('TBA' for short) the sweetest of the German whites, both made from grapes that have been infected with the ominous-sounding fungus Botrytis cinerea, or 'noble rot.' In the process of drying and shriveling the grapes, botrytis leaves behind rich honeyed flavors and a haunting minerality—qualities key to the reputations of both wines." Read the article here:

"Pale gold colored, the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest has a nose of lemon marmalade, preserved mandarin peels and honeyed peaches with wafts of dried herbs, musk perfume and beeswax. It's very sweet, unctuous and rich in the mouth with plenty of freshness and a pleasant herbal lift."

    • "Top 100 Wines of 2018"

"Best known for Pinot Noir, Merry Edwards also produces this unctuous dessert wine from estate-grown fruit. The grapes are picked at optimal sweetness, before they turn to raisins. After vinification, the wine tastes of crème brûlée, caramel, spiced baked apple, and poached peach, with racy acidity balancing the teeter-totter."

"When the history of Sonoma county is written, Merry Edwards will be in chapter one. She began her career in 1973 when the business of wine was a good ole boys network. It is Merry Edwards who helped inspire many women to enter the wine business and help break the proverbial glass ceiling. This Late Harvest beauty shows brilliant gold in color, all honey and tropical fruit. One word to describe this wine …SWEET!"

"There’s a fun “liar” quality to this tasty dessert, in the opposite way that Argentina’s Torrontes is typically caught in a lie.  There, the nose leads you to think sweet, but the palate surprises with crisp and dry.  Here, Merry Edwards gives you the full morning hayfield on the nose, and surprises with honeyed melon and citrus with a sweetgrass complement on the palate.  A true after dinner conversation piece."

"This light gold colored late harvest Sauvignon Blanc opens with a fragrant golden raisin bouquet with hints of apricot. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, balanced and juicy. The flavor profile is a very tasty golden raisin and ginger blend with hints of orange, honey and fig. The finish is pleasantly sweet and fades away nicely. This wine would be great on its own to close a big dinner. I would pair it with Italian cookies."

"A fine, complex late harvest Sauvignon. It's velvety in texture, very concentrated, and full bodied, with firm acidity, a very long flavor evolution, and a very long finish. In aroma/flavor, it tastes of peach jam, honey, candied lemon, lime, vanilla, caramel apple, guava, litchi nut, and spicy oak. Great value."

    • "Wonderful late harvest Sauvignon. It is luscious and rich, with intense aromas/flavors (peach, truffle, dried fig, pineapple, honey, pepper, oak), excellent balance, and an extremely persistent finish. Terrific. One of the best of its type I’ve tasted."

    • "Fine Example of a Type or Style of Wine"
"Leading with highly concentrated and fully botrytized aromas whose components of caramel, flamed orange peel and beeswax push well forward of a bare bit of background, loosely apricot-like fruit, Ms. Edwards’s very sweet, dessert version of Sauvignon Blanc is a luscious and downright decadent wine whose late-harvest unctuousness effectively nullifies any varietal character. It turns out to be a richer and more complete wine on the palate than is advertised in the nose, and, while checking in with 13.9% residual sugar, it is quite well-balanced and not close to cloying."
