Merry Edwards Wines

Cuvee August

This rare cuvée celebrates the birth of Merry's first grandchild, August Wang Miller. She was born in the auspicious eighth month of 2014 – the year of the wooden horse. The label design honors her Chinese heritage. Like Merry's granddaughter, this Pinot Noir is a keeper and should age with beauty and grace.

"Named for Edwards’ first grandchild born in this vintage year, this wine is made from fruit sourced from Meredith Estate Vineyard. Velvety smooth and perfumed, it offers piquant pepper and cardamom scents, along with intense rhubarb compote and raspberry flavors. It shows both purpose and quiet power, wrapped in violet and rose."

"The grapes for Merry Edwards’ Cuvée August, named after her first grandchild and her most expensive Pinot Noir, come from the top part of the slope of the Meredith Estate. A dazzling and explosive wine, its concentration almost borders on a “Pinot Syrah” style, but does not cross the line. It’s just rich and savory and refined all at once. Despite its power, it’s still closed and tightly wound. At this stage, the “regular” (I hate to call it that) Meredith Estate is more expressive. It will be fun to see how they develop over the next five to ten years."

"It is a superb wine: full bodied, very supple in texture, fine and complex in flavor (strawberry, cherry, raspberry, blackberry, rosehips, vanilla, spicy oak, pepper), well balanced, with a long, vibrant, persistent finish. Needs aging."

"Celebrating the birth of Ms. Edwards’s first grandchild and sourced from a selected small block of the winery’s Meredith Estate Vineyard, the limited, Cuvée August bottling is absolutely brimming with juicy, optimally ripened, red cherry fruit and sports the fine, velvety feel that is unique to Pinot Noir. It is full without being in the least heavy and keeps tannin well in check, and its combination of suppleness, fruity plumpness and easy accessibility makes for a rich and satisfying rendition that, while in no danger of fading away any time soon, shows surprisingly well in its youth."

"2014 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Cuvée August, dark and savory and earthy, with aromas and flavors of black raspberries and mocha, delicate tannins, crisp acids paired with truffles (pheromones), shaved over creamy pasta."

"This dark ruby colored Pinot Noir from Merry Edwards is very, very good. It opens with a fragrant and appealing strawberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, smooth and elegant. The flavor profile is a tasty mild strawberry with notes of gentle minerality and hints of red raspberry. The finish is dry and its flavors drift away nicely. This Pinot evolves nicely with a little air, so we would suggest decanting it for a bit. It would pair nicely with grilled veal chop."
